“The Resurrection”
Job asked a question once: (Job 14:14) If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my
appointed time will I wait, till my change come. The most important fact in the Bible is the “Resurrection
of Jesus Christ from the dead”. On the resurrection depends all else. (1st Cor. 15:16-17) For
if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in
your sins. The important fundamental fact of the resurrection is here set forth. (Matt. 16:18) And
I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall
not prevail against it. The gates of hell or the bars of the tomb would not prevent the resurrection of Jesus
Christ, and hence could not prevent the establishment of the church of Christ. (Psalm 16:10) For
thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. This scripture
tells us essentially what Matt. 16:18 does: that Christ would be raised from the dead. The “it” in
Matt. 16:18 does not refer to the church but the building of it, which depended primarily on Christ’ resurrection. (Rom.
1:4) And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection
from the dead: The fundamental fact that proved that Jesus was the Son of God was His resurrection – not
His birth – not His death. (Acts 24:15) And have hope toward God, which they themselves
also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
(Acts 12:4) And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four
quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. Here the word “Easter” is
used in the King James translation only. It should have been translated “Passover” as it is in the ASV.
Nowhere are we commanded to observe Easter Sunday as the resurrection day. But we are commanded to come together
to break bread on the first day of every week. Every Lord’s Day is the resurrection day and is so observed
by all Christians. (Luke 24:1) Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning,
they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. (Is.
28:16) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone,
a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Why is Jesus to be a “Tried
Stone, a sure Foundation?” Simply because of His Resurrection from the dead. All of God’s dealing with
man, including the whole Christian system is based on one fundamental fact – The resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead.
